Does anyone remember the Waikiki ? Waikiki Club ?

Hello ! I'm trying to find a little bit of history on the Waikiki... were there multiple locations on Catalina ? I have a few pieces of paper ephemera that mention a Crescent Ave. location... yet I have also seen the names "New Waikiki", "Waikiki Club", and "The Waikiki" also mentioned as being in Avalon. Were these one and the same ? Any ideas of when it may have opened and closed ? Any info would be most appreciated , thank you !

    There was a cocktail lounge with the name Waikiki that was on the corner of Metropole and Front Street (Crescent Avenue) in the late forties and into the fifties. Since then, and I know not when, it was replaced by a bank.

    In the 60's there was a great bar called The Hurricane on Cresent, on the corner of Cresent and Metropole that I heard burned down. There was also a bar called the Sloop John B in the same area. The graddaddy of them all and I think still exists is the Marlin Club which is more of a locals hangout.

    The Waikiki was located on the corner of Metropole and Cresent. It was a dinnerhouse with a great bar and a hotel on the second floor. Carl Zinner a long shoreman owned the place. The Hurricane Cove Restaurant and Bar was right next door. A fire started in the early morning hours in the Hurricane Cove that spread to the Waikiki building and half a city block was lost. I belive it was in 1979. Both the Waikiki and the Hurricane Cove were my favorite places to drink in town. I have been in Avalon for 35 years and in that time there has not been another place called the Waikiki. Hope this helps.

    Hey Billfish55,

    Was that on the corner where the golf cart rental is now, or on the other side?

    The Waikiki was on the location where Scari built his bank! I worked summers at the Waikiki 1974 until it burned down before season 1979. It was a great place to work and a fun place to be. Lots of local and overtown characters during those years!!!!! Carl Zeiner, the owner, was a character himself. The Waikiki was also known as Zeiner's Zoo!!!!

    Hey Vickie;

    I think I know you, but you have to pass a test, just a few questions. All of this ifor Homeland Security reasons :-).

    1. What ski resort did one of your bartenders work in before working the Waikiki in the summer of 1976 and what was his 1st name.

    2. Who owned the house you stayed in on Whittley Ave? It's not Carl, he just leased it.

    3. What was Carl Zeiner's girlfriends 1st name.

    Let me know;

    My father, JACK DAVIS SR was the chief at the Waikiki Dinner Club back in the 60's before going to JACK'S STEAK HOUSE on Clarissa. I was just a kid then, spent most of my time diving for the boat, lagging coins in front of the original Busy Bee or hanging at the Mardi Gras.

    My wife's late father, Bill Slaughter, was bartender at the Waikiki and El Galleon back in the 60's. Her late mother, Jean Slaugther, was a waitress at a couple of places on the island during that time. Anyone have any old pics from then?
