Hello,

Planning to Visit in early November of 2012, Hoping to hike from Two Harbors to Avalon. And then stay a couple nights in Avalon.

What is the weather going to be like in Little Harbor that time of year, can it get really windy? Is it worth tenting? Can you have a campfire and buy firewood? Who from?

Can you rent an electric or gas power scooter in Avalon (who from)? can it be driven around the island?

My husband is looking for this place that takes the picture of your own boat and scans it on to a wind breaker and then embroider's the name of the boat above that. The city is being asked to jump through hoops that it cannot afford. This sewage "PROBLEM" has been around for the last 50+ years. Must the cuurent citizens of Avalon pay the price for the past?

25+ years of outstanding food and service and it is not good enough for landlords the Santa Catalina Island Company. If it isn't broke why fix it? This is a cautionary tale for any successful money making merchant whose lease is held by the Island Company.

Hi all and thanks in advance for any advice and suggestions you may provide. I'm planning a trip to Catalina in 1 week (2/3/12), and I'm planning on dropping the big question to my girlfriend and asking for her hand in marriage. I'm looking for a good place preferably outdoors, with beautiful scenery, and overlooking the ocean. I'd like to stay in a close proximity to avalon, but willing to venture out (by golf cart). Any ideas will help, as I haven't spent much time on the island itself, just the surrounding waters :). Thanks again and I'm looking forward to any and all responses.

My husband and I were annual visitors to the island. We even gifted friends with trips there until we started getting nice complaints from those friends. So...we went back there to be sure. And sure enough. It has become a dirty, crowded place with children speeding errantly everywhere in the golf carts. The main street shops looked like I was visiting Tijuana, not Catalina. But, the worse thing was that while we were out on the Jeep tour, our hotel room was broken in to and items stolen.

And, the police could have cared less when we showed up to report it. Now why would I pay premium prices to be treated like that?

Please find a way to advertise loudly when (if) you get the island cleaned up.

Me and some family will be out there the 31 of january 2012 and want to go fishing. But i can not find a boat to use are there any locals that want to go fishing I will buy the bait and gas lunch whatever we just want to fish for for a while and have some fun. We like to fish not party. Or if anyone has a boat or RIB they want to rent or donate for a few hours either would be great. thanks for all your help Catalina

I've Been Away for a While - What's Changed?

Hi!

I'm a huge Catalina Island fan - I used to visit there every year (at least once) until around 2003, when finances were no longer plentiful. I have not been there in 8 years, which makes me very sad. In my years of visiting the island, I've done action-packed day trips. I've done casual, 'do-nothing' day trips. I've stayed a full week. I've stayed over long holiday weekends. I've done solo trips and trips with many friends. I've stayed in apartments and cottages and a couple of the hotels.

When I saw the current promo for the free round-trip birthday boat ride via Catalina Express, I knew it was time to return to Avalon. So I will return in July.

In fact, I am actually a moderator on another discussion board (not a board about Catalina), and we have a Southern California sub-forum in which I am trying to encourage some of the members to take their first trips to the island with this free birthday offer.

Now I am reading all of these things about how Avalon has gone downhill; it's not the same place that it used to be; the crime level has gone up (what kind of crimes, exactly?); there are seedy people hanging around everywhere, etc. Prior to reading all the negative stuff, I had been hearing about all of these new things (like the zip line and new restaurants and hotels) that were sort of attracting people back to Avalon and giving it a shiny new appeal.

And...Pebbly Beach Road is now inaccessible? Is that true? Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't Pebbly Beach Road the road you turn onto (along the shore) when you rent a golf cart? If so, I walked along that road many, many times, just soaking in the ocean view. Is is no longer possible to walk on it? If so, why?

Can someone tell me exactly how bad Avalon has gotten and anything that has closed or changed for the worse so I won't be totally shocked when I get there?
